Here's my entry.

Sunset.
Step one: Plain white walls. You get some bright blue and sponge paint a blue and white cloudy sky on the upper half of the wall. Fade (using less paint on dryer sponges) as you go down the wall.
Step two: Bright orange spray paint. You have the carpet ripped out and stand a few feet from the wall. Wide... even... glowing orange to create the sunset. The lower half of the wall is white with orange flecks.
Step three: Place a light against the back wall that shines directly at the "horizon" and it will illuminate the room with those colors and create a setting sun effect.
put that light on a dimmer and REALLY make the sun set like when you're watching movies or such.

I may not really have time for this, but for CC exclusives...
Quick advice: don't use anything dark unless you're going to have a lot of light, and a lot of air circulating (lots of lights = much heat).
Could you maybe do a quick napkin sketch of the room's dimensions, rough in where the lights and stairs are, any major pieces of furniture you know will be there when it's done? I could probably render something for you if I had a better impression, but then again I've been really busy, so no promises.
Just throwing out colors, a Spawn inspired room could be pulled off with a lighter necro green, trimmed in red and black, and brushed silver accents everywhere, like all of the door hardware, light switches, or even painting chainlinks as a wall border.

Seeing your layout, I would run a nice hunter green with a light oak trim in the tv area. If you are going to be placing your collection down there, and depending how much you are wanting to do, I would build lighted cabinets for your pieces along the walls.

Well, I'll have to try it at the office tomorrow if I get time. The laptop just can't handle it.

Everything depends on the bookcases:
For wood bookcases, walls should be cream with rust brown or darker trim.
For bookcases (like I have) that are silver/grey/black color, the walls are light grey (somewhat darker than the bookcase if grey) with semigloss black trim. I have posters framed in black and they look great.
